The history of the famous watch brand Eterna has its origins in the ancient Swiss town of Grenchen (Grenchen), located at the foot of the Jura mountains in the canton of Solothurn. In the mid-nineteenth century, Switzerland was experiencing an economic crisis, which is particularly reflected badly on the residents of small towns. For the revival of the economy in Grenchen City Council accepted the proposal of Dr. Joseph Girard (Josef Girard, 1803-1869) to develop the watch industry.
The allocated budget money and Joseph Girard farmer Anton Schild (Anton Schild) organized a training workshop in 1851, which invited the famous watchmakers began to teach the basics of Grenchen residents watchmaking. Soon Joseph Girard and his brother Yusebom Girardi (Euseb Girard, 1806-1883) opened a workshop for the assembly of watch movements «Girard Frères & Kunz». But unfortunately, the company has existed for a long time and not because of economic difficulties have had to close shop in 1856. However, Joseph Girard has not stopped and made a second attempt to organize a new watchmaker. This time, the partners were invited to the son of Anton Schild - school teacher Urs Schild (Urs Schild, 1829-1888). So together we created a new company «Dr. Girard & Schild », which is the ancestor of modern watches Eterna.
One of the first steps of the young company «Dr. Girard & Schild »was the acquisition of land for the construction of the factory. The selected land was near the river, the water of which would be used as an energy source. In a highly competitive company «Dr. Girard & Schild »until 1862 was not a success and brought losses. Only since 1863 has started financial growth and development of the company.
In 1866, Joseph Girard decided to return to medical practice and sold his share in the charter capital of the company Urs Schild. From this moment begins a new chapter in the history of the brand Eterna. As head of the company, later renamed «Schild Freres & Co», Urs Schild began to reform its industrial base. In 1870, the factory was built, equipped with the latest equipment to automate the build process. Increased production led to the involvement of additional human resources. And soon the staff of the company «Schild Freres & Co» has more than 300 people. The success and continued development of the company until the mid 70's of the last century. Intense competition in the watch world has led to a decline in the price of the product, resulting in «Schild Freres & Co» becomes unprofitable. For the rehabilitation of the company was insufficient cost reduction, it was necessary to move on to the issue of hours. So in 1876 there were the first watch brand «Schild Freres & Co».
Three years after the death in 1888 Urs Schild, a company headed by his son Max Schild (Maks Schild), and after another 10 years of management of the company was continued by his brother Theodore Schild (Theodor Schild).
Beginning of the XX century was marked by the company "Schild Freres & Co" increase in sales both within Switzerland and abroad, as well as improving its financial performance. In addition, in 1900, the brand "Schild Freres & Co" was awarded a gold medal at the International Exhibition, held in Paris.
Six years later, in 1906, the company "Schild Freres & Co" has been renamed to "Fabriques Eterna, Schild Freres & Co", and export mechanisms now carried out under the logo Eterna "ETA".

The back side of the watch case closed by a special metal cover that provides enhanced resonance ringing alarm clock, and the face - grille that protects against damage to the fragile glass dial. These compact and reliable watches have gained widespread popularity during World War II.
In 1928, the company had passed a new milestone: the release of movements reached 1 million units. Watch brand Eterna has become recognizable and popular far beyond the borders of Switzerland, with the greatest popularity was received with a super model body.

It was also created several collections of men's watches Eterna, a special interest among these is the series of Hexa. It was a pocket watch that could also be used as a desktop. Plant spring mechanism hours Hexa produced when opening or closing the lid of the metal outer skin of leather.

In the same year the management company Theodor Schild passed to his nephew Rudolf Schild-Comtesse (Rudolf Schild-Comtesse 1900-1978). Under the leadership of Rudolf Schild-Comtesse company made a number of achievements that have become milestones in the art of watch-making, such as a watch with automatic winding rotor, is rotated by a small ball bearing.
Logo "Eterna-matic" first appeared on the dials of watches "Eterna" in 1948, the creation of automatic winding rotor, is rotated by a small bearing on the 5 balls smaller than a millimeter, made possible by the long-term research work being carried out by engineers. The new mechanism has been released with the index in 1199.
The principle of bi-directional rotation used for new mechanisms, allowed to increase their efficiency and reduce the time the plant manual. Moreover, even for one day was increased reserve hours. Creating a self-winding mechanism with a rotor on the bearing is difficult to overestimate the invention of "Eterna" is nothing more dramatic in the automatic winding mechanism is not invented yet. These mechanisms, which are based on the prototype of the watch Eterna, equipped with all manufactured movement with automatic winding.
In 1952 a group of "Eterna" introduced a new modification of the "female" self-winding movement - caliber 2365. Within a few years after the release of the first "pilot" the party of these mechanisms for their implementation capacity has reached 3 million copies. It was a great success.
